In his first big interview with Russian media, the new US Ambassador to Russia says he hopes to contribute to rebuilding trust between the two countries, despite their relationship being poorer than in a long time.

The Moscow Times reports this

Jon Huntsman (57) was appointed new US Ambassador to Russia last September and in October, a Kremlin spokesperson expressed that President Vladimir Putin has high hopes for the new American Ambassador

- I have recently started, and I can tell you that the level of trust is zero, Huntsman says to the Russian newspaper Vedomosti Daily.

- Trust is a precondition for cooperation and progress between people and countries, the new Ambassador says.

Improving relations with Russia were a key element of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Nevertheless, political tensions have increased since August, among others because of new sanctions from the USA.

According to Huntsman, Russia’s alleged involvement in the American presidential election last year is the main reason why the relationship between the countries has worsened.

- Their involvement led us to this low level. However, the original cause of the rather cool climate was the situation in the Ukraine, he says.
