The North is heavy on political symbolism, but in the Canadian federal election it will be something of an afterthought. Canadian voters will head to the polls on October 19. And while the national campaigns will likely be standard fare, focusing primarily on the economy and terrorism, campaigners in the North will be more interested in things like the high cost of food and telecommunications, The Arctic Journal reports.

Pierre Dufour, a Liberal candidate, wants to have an independent review of Nutrition North, a food subsidy program. Food in northern Canada is significantly more expensive than in southern Canada, due in large part to the fact that items like fresh produce need to be delivered by air.
