Putin made clear that Russia will modernize her military infrastructure in the High North in order to protect the country’s borders.

During his speech, which this year had a record-long duration of 1 hour an 55 minutes, he also said that shipping traffic through the Northeast Passage should be ten times higher by 2024.

President Putin also said Russia is developing several new nuclear weapons that cannot be stopped by other countries’ missile shields.

In his State of the Union speech yesterday, Putin argued that Russia has to develop new and more powerful nuclear weapons as a response to the US missile shield and what he argues is the USA’s violation of the START arms reduction agreement.
