Dear reader. The Norwegian parliamentary election is nearing, while the Norwegian-Russian fisheries cooperation is in a crisis. Here is the latest news from the High North.
Last week, the Støre Cabinet announced its High North Strategy. High North researcher Andreas Østhagen has commented on the strategy and believes Norway must navigate increasing interest and interference in its northern regions.
And let's not forget that the Northern Norwegian football team of Bodø/Glimt made history by qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Mining news
Shortly after the historic relocation of Kiruna Church in Northern Sweden, the mining company reports that more of the area around the city must give way to the mine if operations are to continue. (Norwegian only)
In the Norwegian Arctic, the first commercial deliveries from the Sydvaranger Mine could be ready at the end of 2026. (Norwegian only)
On Russia
The Norwegian Russian fisheries cooperation is at risk.
“The fisheries cooperation between Norway and Russia has survived several previous crises, but none can be compared to the situation we are currently facing," says researcher Anne-Kristin Jørgensen.
“If anyone still wonders whether Norway is deeply involved in Russia's war against Ukraine, they should take a look at the threats against the Norwegian-Russian fisheries agreement”, comments editor in High North News, Arne O. Holm, in his weekly column.
The Norwegian Police fear that the border station to Russia will turn into a car cemetery. And the Norwegian government wants to limit Russian vessels' opportunity to sail in Norwegian waters. (Norwegian only)
