Greenland’s government has published a statement in which it supports a ban on the use and transport of heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the Arctic.

Greenland’s government has published a statement in which it supports a ban on the use and transport of heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the Arctic.

The potential environmental and economic risks involved in case of an heavy fuel oil spill in the Arctic constitute a key factor for the Naalakkersuisut’s decision.

The International Maritime Organisation’s Standing Committee on Protection of the Marine Environment meets again in October, and one of the items on its agenda is a ban against use and transport of HFO in the Arctic.
