US President Donald Trump continues to iterate the need for the US to have Greenland, but says he "won't use force".

US President Donald Trump seeks "immediate negotiatons" to once again discuss the acqusition of Greenland by the United States, he tells the audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Trump spoke Wednesday.

Trump continues to state the need for ownership over Greenland for national and international security reasons.

"It is the United States alone that can protect this giant mass of land, this giant piece of ice; develop it and improve it, and make it so that it is good and safe for Europe, and good for us," he argued.

Greenland is a self-governed country, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a Nato ally. Responding to Trump's continued statements about taking over Greenland, the Greenlandic and the Danish government have previously and continously made clear that Greenland is not for sale.

"Won't use force

Despite the continued statements of acquisition, Trump states in the speech that he will not use force to take over the Arctic island.

"We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force. People thought I would use force, but I don't have to use force, I don't want to use force. I won't use force," Trump continued and added:

"All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland."

"They have a choice, you can say "yes" and we will be very appreciative, or you can say "no" and we will remember.

The issue still remains

In a reaction to Trump's speech, reported by Danish TV2, Denmark's Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen, stresses that Trump's ambition is still intact, but says it is positive that Trump says he won't use military force.

"But it doesn't make the issue go away. The challenges this remains," he adds while referring to Trump's statements about Denmark not being able to look out for Greenland.
