Indigenous film conference in the North with Walt Disney Studios

On Friday, the third Indigenous Film Conference starts in Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino), Sápmi/Northern Norway. Under the heading "Reconciliation and New Futures", a number of discussions, workshops and film screenings are on the programme.

Among the questions for discussion are the following: What role does film play as a platform for truth and the visibility of injustice? Can the Sami film field be reconciled without experiencing equal premises for development and growth as the rest of the film field?

Sami and other indigenous talents are also invited to a workshop about animation with the world-leading Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Themes such as circular storytelling with input from joik and other traditional practices, indigenous futurism, as well as the use of technologies within extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI), will also be explored throughout the weekend.

The conference is organized by the International Sami Film Institute – and concludes on Sunday with a screening of ÁRRAN 360° (open to the public). This is an innovative Sámi film project with six short art films shown in a lávvu on a 360-degree screen.
