In May 2017 in Fairbanks Alaska, Finland will succeed the USA in the chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

Admiral Papp Jr, US Special Envoy for Arctic Issues, announced the news during his speech to the Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø this morning.

- We have added the Arctic Councils 20 years celebration to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, in May next year. Then Finland will also take over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council, says Papp.

The United States  have since April 24, 2015, held the two-year rotating chairmanship of the Arctic Council. And after visiting Tromsø, Papp heades for Helsinki in connection with the chairmanship.

- We have already started working on it, since we want to ensure continuity in the work of the Arctic Council, Papp says.
