Wants Independence for Eastern Greenland
There is a simmering feeling among people in Eastern Greenland. They feel overlooked by the central authorities in Nuuk, leading to a new party possibly seeing the light of day. The party will work to ensure that the eastern part of the world's largest island becomes independent.
The initiators, Mike and Anette Nicolaisen from Tasiilaq, say to dr.dk. that they feel all investments are focused on the capital, Nuuk, and the western part of the island. For young people to have a future, the central authorities must not forget the eastern part.
There is also a lack of investment in education that could make young people stay in the local community longer, the two believe. In May, 600 of Tasiilaq's 1,800 residents demonstrated against the lack of investment in the east.
"We demand attention and action must be taken now," says Mike Nicolaisen.
