Volcanic Eruption in Iceland Officially Over

It has now been three months since lava last flowed from the Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland, and the Met Office has therefore declared the eruption finished, according to RUV Iceland.

Scientists continue to monitor the area closely, however, as data still indicate magma movement below the surface. The eruption began on the evening of Friday 19th March 2021 and lasted for six months, with several inactive periods.

The lava filed at Fagradalsfjall is still dangerous, even though the eruption is over. It is still hot in places, and the new lava is still settling, with regular cracking and collapses.

Caution is advised in the area.
