Three New Arctic Warships for Denmark
18 years ago, an expert group under the Danish defense concluded that Denmark's Arctic warships had to be replaced after 2020. Nevertheless, no money was set aside for new construction for almost two decades, writes Berlingske.
On Monday last week, Denmark's Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen announced the news that three new Arctic ships will be acquired, as part of an Arctic defense package of almost 15 billion Danish kroner.
The Danish defense is to be equipped with three new warships for use in the North Atlantic, but they are not yet on the drawing board, and cannot be launched until after 2030, writes Berlingske.
The three new Arctic warships will replace the four worn-out inspection ships in the Thetis class, according to the Norwegian Defense Forum.
The four ships that are used today were launched in the years 1989 to 1991 and have since safeguarded Danish sovereignty in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Even after it became known that the ships should be replaced, an unknown amount of millions has gone into maintaining the old ships.
In a report from 2007 on the four inspection ships, it is stated that there would be "an increasing error rate until approximately 2020, after which new procurement is considered necessary to continue to be able to maintain capacity", according to Berlingske.
