Swedish security will be affected by climate change

Climate change will be challenging for Sweden and the rest of the world. A researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) (Swedish) has mapped out future risks and consequences for Swedish security.

Climate change can create tension within NATO and the relationship to Russia may change. Climate change also affects the everyday life of each individual soldiers, believes Researcher Henrik Persson.

"They must learn to manage higher temperature in facilities, vessels, and buildings. Perhaps the Armed Forces must cancel summer exercises due to high temperatures for the soldiers and high risk of fire. The Armed Forces, and not least the Home Guard, may also be called out more often for disaster relief," says Persson.
