Snowcross World Championship to Kirkenes in April
This year's world championship in snowcross will be held in Kirkenes, Northern Norway, the last weekend in April, writes the Norwegian Motorsport Association (NMF) in a press release.
The championship was originally planned for Turkey. After the powerful earthquake that hit the country in February, the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation has had to renounce its responsibility as an organizer.
"We are incredibly happy that Kirkenes Motor Club and the Norwegian Motorsport Association are taking on the task at such short notice so that the championship will take place," say representatives of the International Motorcycle Federation.
The event will bring together some of the world's best snowmobile athletes, including those from Norway, and the NMF is proud to organize this together with Kirkenes Motor Club.
"This will be a fantastic opportunity for both athletes and the public to experience a spectacular winter sport in a beautiful and unique part of Norway," says Tony Isaksen, Secretary General of the NMF.
The motor club in Kirkenes, which was founded in 2003, has gained good experience in organizing competitions and is now taking the world championship head-on.
"This is an opportunity that Kirkenes Motor Club could not refuse and it is a perfect occasion to celebrate our 20th anniversary. For about a year, we have been planning a big race in Kirkenes at approximately the same time, so the threshold to say yes was low. The work to convert the race into a world championship is already underway," says the motor club's chairman Aleksander Nordgaard.
