Scientists Map Underwater Noise around Greenland

An international group of researchers from Aarhus University, Greenland’s Nature Institute and the University of Washington has analyzed one of the biggest-ever data sets about underwater noise ever collected, according to Sermitsiaq.

The collection of data has taken place in Greenlandic waters. 26 measuring points with sound recorders have been placed at depths between 100 to 400 meters below surface.

Malene Simon from the Cilmate Research Center at Greenland’s Nature Institute says to the paper that a more ice-free Arctic most likely will result in increased human presence in the area.

The new knowledge will be used to monitor development as human activity in the ocean areas surrounding Greenland increases.
