Russian Nuclear Icebreaker Pushed Back to 2030
The planned Russian heavy nuclear icebreaker "Rossiya" is to be built by around 2030, according to Russian newspaper Kommersant.
The vessel's commissioning was originally planned for 2027. Construction work is currently underway at the Zvezda shipbuilding complex in Russia's Far East.
Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister, Denis Manturov, says construction of a series of 60 MW nuclear icebreakers is continuing at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. He recalled that three nuclear-powered ships - "Arktika", "Sibir" and "Ural" - already operate in the Arctic Ocean.
The new icebreaker is considered necessary for regular year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route.
