Russian Hackers Suspected of Kalix, Sweden Malware Attack

Just before Christmas, Kalix municipality in Northern Sweden was hit by a malware attack knocking its systems completely out.

Now, IT Chief Kenneth Björnfot with the local authorities says the attack is suspected to come from Russia, SVT reports.

“We can see where the attack came from. What we suspect more than anything else, is what the Defense Chief has already stated, namely that the Kalix incident is suspected to have originated in Russia.”

During the attack, a ransom was demanded to unlock the computer systems. The municipality refused to pay.
