Record Ice Melt in Greenland

Last week, 17 billion tons of Greenland’s ice cap melted, according to KNR. Glaciologist Marco Tedesco at Columbia University says this is likely to change Greenland’s surface and contribute to increased future ice melting.

A high pressure located over Northeast Greenland draws hot air from the south, leading to last week’s record-high temperature of 19.8 degrees Celsius in the area. That is the highest temperature ever measured in the region.

Tedesco says such atmospheric incidents are becoming more frequent and long-lasting, and that man-made climate changes are the primary cause for this.

Greenland’s glacier melting season typically lasts from June to August.
