Rapid Ice-Melting in Svalbard

A brand new study shows that around 61.7 gigatons of ice disappeared from the glaciers in Svalbard in six weeks. That's almost as much ice as the entire Jostedalsbreen glacier, the largest glacier on the European mainland.

"That's a lot of water, enough to cover the entire city of Oslo with more than 130 meters of water," says glaciologist Thomas V. Schuler to met.no.

He thought there was a mistake in the model, but the numbers were confirmed when he went to see for himself.

Record-high temperatures combined with humid air and warm seas caused the enormous melting in Svalbard last year.
