Qeqqata Municipality with Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative amongst Youth

Queqqata municpality in Greenland has revealed that 29 percent of pupils in year 9 and 10 of school are regular smokers, 14 percent have been drunk and 11 percent have tried smoking hashish, according to Sermitsiaq.

As a consequence of these findings, the municipality will initiate a major effort to prevent substance abuse amongst youth following the so-called Icelandic model.

The model includes an evening curfew for children and yough, good sport and leisure activity offers as well as parent involvement.
