Pink Salmon Breeding in Iceland

It has been confirmed for the first time ever that pink salmon have been breeding in Icelandic rivers, RUV Iceland reports.

Samples from Botnsá river in Hvalfjörður prove previous assumptions without doubt: that the Pacific ‘hump back’ salmon species now exists in the wild in Iceland.

There are plans to research salmon fishing rivers around the country to establish how widespread the fish are.

The pink salmon was first seen in Iceland in 1960 and have been spotted with increasing regularity since 2015. It is believed the fish came from Russia, via Northern Norway.
