Official Apology for the "Coil Campaign"
Naalakkersuisut (the Greenlandic government) and the Danish government are now officially apologizing to the many Greenlandic women who had IUDs inserted without consent for several decades in the so-called "coil campaign".
This was reported by Sermitsiaq.
The Danish and Greenlandic Prime Ministers issued the apology in a joint statement:
Danish PM Mette Frederiksen apologizes to the Greenlandic women who have been subjected to systematic discrimination in the IUD case, while Denmark was responsible for the health care system in Greenland until 1992.
Greenland's PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen apologizes for the cases that occurred in the period after Greenland took over responsibility for the health care system in Greenland.
"We cannot change what has happened. But we can take responsibility. Therefore, on behalf of Denmark, I would like to apologize," said PM Mette Frederiksen.
