Norwegian Sami Parliament Explores Sami Ethnicity Registration

The Norwegian Sami Parliament Sametinget has decided to explore the opportunities and potential conditions for registering Sami ethnicity in the Norwegian national registry as well as in health registers required by law, according to a recent press release.

The Sametinget argues that the Sami as an indigenous people has a collective right to full knowledge about their own health, and such knowledge is conditioned upon registering Sami ethnicity in health registers.

At present, registering ethnicity is prohibited for public registers, however, one may register such information in research projects.
