Norway and EU Agrees on Green Alliance
The EU and Norway are establishing working groups that can deepen the partnership within the green shift. The business community will also be invited.
It is one of the most concrete things that comes out in the agreement that Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen signed in Brussels on Monday.
This is a non-international binding agreement. This means that it does not obligate the parties legally or financially. The agreement differs, for example, from the climate agreement Norway has with the EU, which is authorized in the EEA agreement and which is binding. It must not be approved by the Norwegian Storting.
The EU and Norway also agree to jointly promote ambitious climate action on the global stage. To this end, the two parties, as leading major donors of climate finance, will cooperate to support developing countries and emerging economies in the process of implementation of their climate and environment policies.
To help keep global temperature rise within the 1.5C limit, the agreement confirms that full respect for the precautionary principle is paramount in the Arctic region.
