Northern Lobster Takes Presedence Over Fish Farming
The Nordland County Governor has rejected plans about establishing a fish farm location in Tysfjord, Northern Norway on the grounds of it being the home of the world’s northernmost lobster population, according to local daily Bladet Vesterålen.
The Governor argues that delousing agents used in fish farming may potentially exceed the tolerance limit for lobster and that the Tysfjord lobster population needs protection, in particular with its being the world’s northernmost distinct lobster population.
The rejection letter also indicates that it may be suggested to make the Tysfjord area a marine protection area due to its special characteristics, including that of hosting the lobsters.
