Nordic Ministers for Equality meet in Iceland
On Tuesday, there was a meeting of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Gender Equality and LGBTI in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The Nordic ministers for equality decided to continue joint efforts to counter the current backlash against gender equality in general – and especially against the rights of girls, women and LGBTI people. This will take place within the framework of the Nordic roadmap 'Pushing back the push-back', which they designed last year.
Among the new initiatives is a campaign aimed at young Nordic people to prevent hate speech and harassment. The ministers also decided to finance a study on masculinity and men's attitudes towards equality in the Nordic region.
“It’s extremely important to continue the fight against the backlash on gender equality and LGBTI rights. We have a long and good experience with Nordic cooperation in the field of equality. It is our duty to do our part as the rights of women and LGBTI people are under threat,” says Iceland’s Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir (Left-Green).
Jakobsdóttir also serves as Minister for Gender Equality and chaired the meeting as Iceland holds presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers this year.
