Nordic-Canadian Summit on Iceland

A Nordic-Canadian meeting of prime ministers it o take place from the 25th to the 26th of June.

The Icelandic government has the chairship of the Nordic Council of Ministers – and therefore invites to the annual summer meeting of the region's five prime ministers and the leaders of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Åland.

Canada's PM Justin Trudeau will also participate as a special guest. In addition, the Secretary General of the council will participate in parts of the meeting.

Central topics for the meeting are social resistance, sea, climate, and Nordic integration.

The prime ministers will more specifically meet in Vestmannaeyjar, an archipelago off Iceland's south coast. 50 years ago, a 155 days-long volcanic eruption took place here. This resulted in a large-scale evacuation of its inhabitants and the destruction of 417 houses. The Nordic countries played a significant part in the rebuilding of the community.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Iceland also hosts an MoD meeting within the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO).
