Nordic 2023 Prize Awarded to Icelandic Writer Sjòn

The Swedish Academy's Nordic Prize is awarded to the Icelandic writer Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson under the pseudonym Sjòn. The prize will be presented during a ceremony in April and included a cash prize of NOK 400 000.

Sjòn is known for poetry, novels, song lyrics, and film scripts, and is behind the script for the Icelandic film Dýrið, which won the Nordic Council's film prize last fall, among other things. He also received the Nordic Council's literature award for the novel Månestein in 2013. Sjòns novels and poetry collections have been translated into more than 30 languages and he has become one of Iceland's leading cultural figures. He has also written song lyrics for another such personality, the musician Björk.

The Swedish Academy is an independent Swedish cultural institution that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature and several other prizes. The institution focuses on promoting Swedish language and literature, but also focuses on Nordic and international literature.
