New Guide Requirements in Svalbard
Earlier this month, the Norwegian government announced in a press release that "Tourist businesses and field businesses that travel, conduct activities or stay outside inhabited areas in Svalbard must in future use approved Svalbard guides."
The measure is being introduced to prevent damage to people and nature.
"Svalbard guides will provide increased safety for both the vulnerable nature and the tourists who visit. With the requirement to use Svalbard guides, the government contributes to the sustainable development of tourism and better competitive conditions by ensuring the guides' competence," says Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth.
The Svalbard Guide Association has worked toward certification of guides on the archipelago and is satisfied with the decision. But they are also interested in how it will be in practice.
"This is a big step forward for the entire industry. Whether this leads to improved quality and safety now depends on implementation, and we trust that the Governor will take this responsibility seriously," states the head of the guide association, Franka Leiterer, in an email to Svalbardposten.
