New Finnish President Elected
Alexander Stubb (National Coalition Party) won the presidential election in Finland on Sunday. Pekka Haavisto (Geen League) was thus defeated.
After 99.7% of the votes had been counted, Stubb had secured 51.6%, while Haavisto had 48.4%.
Stubb has been a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2008, Finland's foreign minister from 2008 to 2011, and EU affairs and foreign trade minister from 2011 to 2014. He has also been prime minister, finance minister, and party leader.
Stubb will take office in March. He will succeed Sauli Niinistö, who has been president since 2012.
