Moving the Svea Flight Tower

On the 12th-13th of October, the control tower on Svea, Svalbard was transported by the boat Kvitnos from Cape Amsterdam to Sjøskrenten in Longyearbyen. There, a new foundation will be laid and it will be given a new function and a continued life writes Hæhre Arctic in a press release.

The aim of the project is tripartite:

  • Proving that reuse is possible and has the potential to create great value in the future.
  • Preserving the cultural value the flight tower represents - the story of Svea in Longyearbyen.
  • Creating a nice place for experiences and communicating the natural and cultural values in Adventdalen.

The flight tower is considered a special building. It has been the gateway to Svea for visitors for 15 years. The tower has slanted, continuous window surfaces facing three directions which provide an undisturbed view and overview of the landscape and what is moving outside.

It brings with it a part of Svea's recent history and can provide a completely unique meeting place and a window towards nature and the landscape.
