MOSAiC Wins Award
During the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland this weekend, the 2022 Arctic Circle Prize was presented to the director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Dr. Antje Boetius and Dr. Markus Rex for leading the MOSAiC expedition.
The expedition has been "an extraordinary contribution to the continuous work of securing a sustainable and prosperous future in the Arctic and for enhancing a more comprehensive understanding of the pace of climate change in the world", states the jury.
In September 2019, the German research icebreaker Polarstern set sail from Tromsø, Norway, to spend a year drifting through the Arctic Ocean - trapped in ice following in the path of Fridtjof Nansen.
The expedition was spearheaded by Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research
(AWI) and led by atmospheric scientist, Dr. Markus Rex.
