More Methane Released as Arctic Lakes Warm
As the climate gets warmer and wetter, more methane is being released from lakes. Arctic lakes risk contributing to the greenhouse effect to a greater extent, according to a new study from Umeå University, among others.
That is reported by Aftonbladet.
Ten lakes in Svalbard and in the subarctic part of Scandinavia have been studied, three of them via the Abisko Scientific Research Station. The majority of methane production occurs in the top ten centimeters of the bottom sediment
The greenhouse gas methane is more than 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
