Mining Opponent Chairs Trade and Raw Material Committee in Greenland

Marianne Paviasen from the Inuit Ataqatigiit parti will chair the Trade and Raw Material Committee of the Inatsisartut, Greenland’s parliament, according to KNR. Paviasen will work to prevent uranium extraction.

Paviasen is the former leader of Urani Naamik, a group working against the extraction of uranium.

The Kuannersuit mining project, also known as Kvanefjeld, is currently in an extensive hearing phase. Greenland Minerals wants to extract rare rock materials, a process in which uranium will be one of the by-products.

The committee’s first meeting is scheduled to take place soon.
