LKAB With Billion Investment in New Mining Facility in Gällivare
LKAB is to build a new sorting plant by the mine in Malmberget, Gällivare, according to a press release.
The investment is SEK 6 billion and the facility will be operational in 2028.
The aim is to be able to sort an additional seven to eight million tonnes of crude ore per year. This is part of the process of separating iron ore from waste rock. The new plant will be built next to the old one on an area of approximately 24,000 square meters.
LKAB's main alternative to building a new smelter was to carry out extensive renovations of the existing plant, but this would not have resulted in increased capacity, the company reports.
