Kangerlussuaq Airport May Cost Denmark

Last September, Greenland’s self-rule government entered into an agreement with the Danish government about the Danish defense’s continuing to use the airport in Kangerlussuaq also after the new airports in Nuuk and Ilulissat are finished in 2023.

It now appears this might be an expensive need for Denmark, according to KNR.

In a note from the Danish Ministry of Defense, it says that investments of DKK 500 million may be needed in order for the defense to continue using the airport. The MoD also stresses that this assessment is uncertain and that it only covers investments, not operating costs.

During the past eight years, a series of estimates have suggested everything from DKK 100 million to 1.5 billion for renovating the Kangerlussuaq airport, depending on what should be included in the project.
