International Research Station on Greenland Threatened by New Rules

After 1 January, foreign scientists can no longer travel to Villum Research Station on northern Greenland via Svalbard, as they have used to in the past, according to Sermitsiaq. From now on, they must travel through Constabel Pynt near Ittoqqortoormiit, where there is police presence.

- This is a catastrophe, says Professor Henrik Skov from Aarhus University, who leads the research station. The new travel pattern means that the costs related to getting to the station are quadrupled and in reality, trips will most likely not be conducted.

If attempts at finding a temporary solution to the problem remain unsuccessful, there will be planned international research projects in which Villum will be unable to contribute.
