Iceland Had Its Hottest Christmas Eve Ever in 2025
On Christmas Eve 2025, Iceland broke its previous temperature record as 19.2°C was measured in Seyðisfjörður in Eastern Iceland. The previous record was 15.9°C, recorded at Skjaldþingsstaðir in Vopnafjörður in 2006.
This was reported by Iceland Monitor.
Iceland also broke its Christmas Day record, which was broken overnight when 19.7°C was measured in Bakkagerði in Eastern Iceland.
The previous record was 13.7°C, recorded at Suðurnes lighthouse on Christmas Day in 2005.
Average December temperatures in Iceland typically range between -1 and 4 °C. The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the unusually warm conditions were caused by an influx of warm, moist air of tropical origin combined with strong winds and local terrain effects in the fjord region.
