Iceland Gives Citizens 5,000 Krona Travel Grant
Iceland gives all Icelanders aged 18 and above a one-off travel grant of ISK 5,000 krona (appr. € 35), valid for use between the start of June and to the end of 2020, according to RUV Iceland.
The gift is to be available in the form of credit accessible through a smartphone app, and can be accepted by all tourism companies with physical operations in Iceland. In total, the travel grant will be given to some 250,000 people and cost the state up to ISK 1.5 billion.
«We realise that 5,000 krónur to all Icelanders aged 18 and over will not change whether companies live or die. This is first and foremost a symbolic gesture,” Tourism Minister Þórdís Kolbrún stated at a recent press conference. “But it will make a difference; especially for companies with smaller capacities.”
