Historic Catch Near Jan Mayen Can Give Norway New Fishing Rights

The Loran vessel from Giske on the northwestern coast of Norway has for the past two months conducted the first-ever profitable catching of cod and Greenland halibut near Jan Mayen island, according to iTromsø.

The ship has caught 300 tons of cod and 70 tons of Greenland halibut.

According to the shipowners, catch samples have been submitted to the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research in order to verify whether the cod caught belongs to the Icelandic/Greenlandic or the North East Arctic cod stock. If the former is the case, its being present over time in the Jan Mayen zone will entitle Norway to a share of its stock.
