Greenland’s Station North Approved as Schengen Border Point

According to KNR, Danish Foreigner and Immigration Minister Mattias Tesfaye (S) has approved the Danish defence’s base Station North in northeastern Greenland as a new border crossing point for the Schengen area.

The station has been a popular entry point for scientists heading for the Willum Research Center since 2015, arriving from Svalbard. However, this arrangement has in reality been illegal and has been completely shut since 1 January this year. That has forced foreign nationals to enter Greenland via other points, which has made their trips excessively more expensive.

The new approval allows the re-introduction of the old travel pattern in which scientists travel via Svalbard to enter northeastern Greenland. This is also expected to be good news for the Ironbark mining corporation, which is currently working on opening a mine at the Citronen Fjord (the Lemon Fjord) in the northern parts of Greenland.
