Greenland’s Inatsisartut Wants Contraceptive Spiral Case Investigated

Greenland’s parliament Inatsisartut has agreed to request that the Danish contraceptive spiral campaign towards Greenlandic girls and women be investigated, Sermitsiaq reports.

Yesterday, the Inatsisartut discussed a proposal from the Naleraq party that the self-rule government Naalakkersuisut be requested to ask the Danish government about an investigation into contraceptive measures in Greenland in the 1960s and 1970s.

DR has revealed in a podcast series the story about the so-called ‘spiral campaign’. Up to 4,000 women and girls down to the age of 13 have had contraceptive spirals inserted, often without their own consent. This has caused widespread reactions from politicians and organizations alike.

The proposal is now to be processed in the relevant committees before going through the second processing round in the Inatsisartut on 2 June.
