Greenland’s Foreign Minister Argues that Only Inuit Should be Allowed to Vote on Independence
Greenland’s Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs, Pele Broberg, this weekend stated in an interview with Danish daily Berlingske that he believes only people of Inuit descent should be allowed to vote in a potential future referendum about Greenlandic independence from Denmark.
His statements have stirred widespread negative reactions in Greenland, according to KNR.
On Sunday, the self-rule authority’s premier Múte B. Egede (IA) came out with a statement saying that Broberg’s statements were not an expression of the Naalakkersuisut’s policy.
The government coalition party Atassut as well as the Demokraatit opposition party have warned against the idea. Several voices have now argued that Broberg should be relieved of his foreign minister job.
