Greenland Wants to Follow Faroe Islands into Paris Agreement

Greenland’s self-rule authority, the Naalakkersuisut, aims at making Greenland part of the Paris Agreement and has now started a hearing process to that purpose, according to KNR. If joining the agreement, Greenland will follow in the footsteps of the Faroe Islands.

When the Paris Agreement was established in 2016, the then-Naalakkersuisut opted out as there were doubts about whether Greenland could join without being affected by Denmark’s obligations, as Greenland is part of the Realm of the Danish Crown.

However, later, the Faroe Islands have clarified such doubts in its relationship with Denmark, and the current Naalakkersuisut with its premier Mute B. Egede now wants to use the same solution.

The hearing deadline is 23 February.
