Greenland: Catfish Case to be Debated Thursday

On Tuesday, members of Greenland’s parliament Inatsisartut will debate and possibly put an end to the controversial catfish case, according to Sermitsiaq.

The case started last may, when the self-rule government raised the quota for this year’s catfish catch. Government premier Kim Kielsen had at this point rented out his own vessel to a person participating in the catfish fisheries.

The Inatsisartut’s oversight committee has investigated the matter with regard to impartiality and concluded with sharp criticism of Kielsen’s managing of the case.

Criticism against Kielsen may have far-reading consequences for Kielsen if Thursday’s debate were to end with a vote and that, in turn, ends with a vote of no confidence. Kielsen may, on his side, opt to announce a new election should he be uncertain about his support amongst the Inatsisartut.
