Food Banks in Yukon Struggle to Meet Ever-Growing Need
Demand is increasing at food banks across Canada, and rural Yukon is especially noticing the growing need.
Yukon has about a 12 percent food insecurity rate, which is a little higher than that of a lot of Canada. In the south, in Watson Lake, it is closer to 25 to 28 percent, which means that one in four people in that community are not sure where their next meals will come from or if they will have enough food, according to CBC.
Sue Rudd, a local food bank coordinator in Watson Lake, says: "The food needs are greater than the monetary support that comes to the food bank."
In the last year, the number of people using food banks in the territory has gone up by 20 percent, and it has doubled since the start of the pandemic.
