Flooding Destroys Murmansk Bridge, Interrupts Railway Transport
A flood in the Murmansk region damaged a railway bridge across the Kola River in northwestern Russia, according to Meduza. As a result, passenger and freight trains along the Vykhodnoy – Kola line have been suspended.
One of the railway bridge’s five pillars collapsed on May 30, following the Kola River overflowing its banks and washing away one of its supporting pillars. Rail links with the city of Murmansk have been interrupted until repair work is complete. Estimates on the restoration time are greatly varied.
The Murmansk train interruption is also affecting companies operating through the Murmansk port, amongst them Russia’s largest coal company, the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), which ships its coal from the port of Murmansk.
