Extra Time for Faroese Government Negotiations

Chairman of the Sambandspartiet party at the Faroe Islands, Steig Nielsen, has been granted additional time to try and complete government formation negotiations with the Folkeflokken and Midterpartiet parties following the 31 August elections, according to Sermitsiaq.

The original deadline was Tuesday at 12 noon.

Fisheries legislation and so-called ‘ethical issues’ have proven to be the most difficult topics of discussion in the negotiations. Should the parties reach an agreement, the three will hold 17 out of the 33 seats in the Lagtinget [parliament].

The Lagtinget reconvenes on Saturday 14 September and negotiations are expected to conclude by then.
