Extensive Avalanche Measures in Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen Local Council Monday decided to demolish 142 houses as a part of securing the town against avalanches. New houses are to be built on another location in town. The inhabitants of the houses in question will thus have to move.

Other avalanche security measures will also be taken, such as constructing ramparts to deflect potential snow masses.

The overall price of all measures included is estimated at NOK 553 million, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
