Expects to open graphite mine in Greenland in four years

The graphite mine at Nanortalik in southern Greenland is expected to open in four years, newspaper AG reports.

The global demand of graphite for battery factories is strong. Among other things, the raw material is important in the production of batteries for electric cars.

The company GreenRoc now has plans to supply the European and North American markets with graphite.

The London-based company's plan is to open a graphite mine on the island of Amitsoq, 20km from Nanortalik, in four years. Design of the mine is expected to start in two years, according to the company's CEO Stefan Bernstein.

Greenland has some of the purest graphite in the world. While Amitsoq is a relatively small mine in an international context, it is interesting because of the high quality of graphite, the newspaper writes.

"Amitsoq is not a large-scale project. We plan to extract 400,000 tonnes of ore a year," Bernstein added.
