Eruption on Reykjanes Peninsula

Another volcanic eruption has startet on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, reports RUV.

The most powerful eruption is in the northern part of the fissure that opened first, and it is still erupting in a considerable part of the fissure that opened last night, according to Víðir Reynisson of Civil Defence. He says the infrastructure is not currently in danger.

The lava has however also ignited wildfires in the area.

This is the fifth eruption this year, the sixth in these areas and the seventh magma run of this event. A total of nine eruptions have now occurred since earthquakes began on the Reykjanes peninsula three years ago, after an 800-year hiatus.
